Are Men's Engagement Rings really catching on?

It isn't often you hear a couple say they're shopping for men's engagement rings, but in reality the concept isn't  so new.  The more "hip" and urban the couple, the more likely they are to look for gender equity in their choice of wedding jewelry.  Instead of relying on the gender roles of their parents' generation, newly engaged couples want to begin their marriages as equal partners.  This doesn't necessarily mean that women are "proposing" to men with an engagement ring – although it could mean that – but rather that both parties should agree to wear one.

Some men will reject the idea of wearing an "engagement ring" unless their fiancé presents the ring as an engagement gift.  Then, it is usually accepted and proudly worn on the right ring finger.  However, with the widening acceptance of men's engagement rings - and mounting pressure on men to wear one - many will compromise by wearing a unique or alternative engagement band on the left hand.

In order to fully understand why guys often balk at men's engagement rings, it's important to consider the reasons why they buy women an engagement ring in the first place.  For one, an engagement ring on a woman's left ring finger tells the world she is "taken", "spoken for", or otherwise "off the market".  A second reason is the message that a ring sends about the giver's buying power. When you consider the difference in price between a ¼ carat diamond and a 2.5 carat solitaire from Tiffany, a diamond engagement ring can say a lot about a couple's wealth.  When women buy men's engagement rings, they are less concerned about social status and "ownership" and more interested in a genuine expression of their loving relationship.

Since a man's engagement ring is usually a plain or minimally embellished band, it isn't always obvious that it's an engagement ring.  Except for the fact that it is worn on the left ring finger, it might easily be mistaken for a fashion ring.  That's why some women prefer to have the ring inscribed with the upcoming wedding date, a loving phrase, or a special symbol of their love.  A sterling silver "Forever" ring or a men's promise ring will often suffice as a men's engagement ring, but most couples opt for a something a little more substantial.

Men's engagement rings can look a lot like wedding rings, or they can look completely different.  The only rule here is that "there are no rules!"  So if you are considering an engagement ring there are many different options available. You can look at bands with a single colored gemstone, like a ruby, sapphire or diamond, or you can opt for a plain gold band with a meaningful inscription.  Many couples look for engagement rings that have a similar look without actually matching.  Others want a ring made of polished titanium or tungsten because it will maintain its lustrous shine.

Being someone who is immersed in the world of jewelry, I am often asked for advice on which styles are the "hottest" in every imaginable type of men's and women's jewelry.  While I hesitate to tell people what to buy – after all, it is a matter of personal taste – I will say I've noticed one trend in men's jewelry this year.  Men's sterling silver rings are selling like crazy! 

It used to be that if you were buying a men's ring, you were either engaged to be married or replacing a lost wedding ring.  That was about it.  But today's men are much more into expressing themselves through jewelry.  Not just any jewelry, mind you, they are specifically interested in rings.  One explanation for this might be that men are still pretty conservative at heart, especially when it comes to wearing jewelry, and rings don't jump out at you as much as necklaces and bracelets.  They seem to "belong" on a man's hand just as much as a watch belongs on his wrist.  Plus, they are available in a nice selection of masculine-looking styles.

After reviewing some of my favorite men's jewelry web sites, I have come up with what I believe to be the "hottest" men's sterling silver rings on the market right now.

In no particular order, they are:

The Three Rope Spinner Ring: This sterling silver ring features woven strands of silver that come together in an intricate pattern, all of which rests atop a spinning outer band.

The Celtic Lionhead Band: Featuring two opposing lion heads, with mouths wide open, this design weaves an iconic Celtic pattern against antiqued black background.

The Benchmark Sterling Silver Wedding Band: Available in multiple widths, this best selling men's sterling silver ring is most popular in a 10mm style that is highly polished and engraved.

A Silver "Puzzle" Claddagh Ring: An unusual take on the classic Claddagh, this ring comes apart when it is not being worn but looks perfectly solid on the finger.

Men's Turquoise Shank Ring: Men don't wear a lot of gemstones, but when they do turquoise is always a favorite, and a shank ring has a sculptural look that complements large hands.

Polished Lug Nut Ring: Perfect for the man who likes to work with his hands, this highly polished ring has the shape of a lug nut on top but it is rounded on the palm side.

Sterling Silver Dragon Spinner: Another favorite among sterling silver men's rings is the dragon spinner ring.  These edgy men's rings are often worn as biker rings.

Sterling Silver Celtic Weave Ring: The Irish have cornered the market on ring designs for men, and the intricately designed Celtic weave pattern is another favorite.

As for the reason why men's sterling silver rings are so popular, I would imagine it is a matter of sheer economics.  Men can buy a sterling silver ring for a lot less money than just about any other metal, and still be confident they are wearing a high quality ring.

Men have always been an important part of the jewelry market, but mostly as buyers of expensive women's jewelry. Yet their role as exclusive purchasers of women's jewelry is beginning to shift, as the sales of fine jewelry for men virtually doubled from 2004 to 2006 to reach $6 billion, according to a new study of the jewelry and watch market published by Unity Marketing.

"Jewelry designed for men used to be a step-child in the jewelry business, as compared to women's jewelry," said Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing and author of "Shopping: Why We Love It and How Retailers Can Create the Ultimate Customer Experience." "But in 2006 the men's jewelry market reached a 10 percent share of the market, so it can't be ignored any longer by jewelry marketers and retailers."

Men's jewelry sales continue strong in the luxury market

Signs are that sales of men's jewelry will continue apace in 2007 and beyond. For example, in Unity Marketing's quarterly surveys of luxury consumer purchases, men's jewelry purchase incidence rose each quarter this year to a high of 12 percent at the close of the third quarter 2007. This compares with an historic level of 5 percent purchase incidence in 2006. Such strong sales bode well for the health of the men's jewelry market going into the traditional fourth quarter gifting season.

"Our findings suggest that men are putting their experience as knowledgeable consumers of women's jewelry to work in making fine jewelry purchases for themselves," says Danziger. "Now that many men are abandoning business casual for more formal business attire, they are interested in accenting their wardrobes not only with a fine watch, but gold rings and cufflinks, and wholesale costume jewelry,fashion jewelry wholesale,wholesale jewelry,jewelry supply,pearl jewelry, body jewelry as well."

Jewelry store sales on upswing in 2006

This surge in interest in men's jewelry coincides with an overall trend in the jewelry market toward specialty retailers who can provide unique designs and individualized service. After losing market share for several years to discounters and mass merchants, specialty jewelers regained a full 50 percent share of the jewelry market in 2006. Says Danziger, "Jewelry shoppers, in their search for higher-quality merchandise and more fashion-forward designs, found that the service and expert advice available in jewelry stores was exactly what they needed. They were willing to trade up for service and experiences that they couldn't find in discount and warehouse retailers."
